Vieux-Fort's airport lies on the far southern side of St. Lucia Island, next to the Caribbean Sea and directly south of Castries. The island's capital city, Castries is home to the smaller George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU), which is often referred to as Vigie Airport since it stands right next to Vigie Beach itself. Hewanorra Airport features an annual throughput of almost 500,000 passengers, with a fairly low number of aircraft movements, due to most flights being large charter jumbo jets.
Hewanorra International Airport is conveniently close to St. Lucia's East Coast Road and stands directly east of Laborie, Piaye and Choiseul. Ground transportation options include car hire, a public bus service and taxis, which link the island's more northerly resorts around Castries, Dauphin and Marigot Bay. Although Vieux Fort is a modern town, many historic Colonial buildings still remain, many of which line Clark Street. Other notable towns on St. Lucia include Gros Islet on the northern coast, and Soufrière, on the south-western side of the island.
